Fall Color Drives Near Charlotte
Nine leaf drives from Union County to the mountains, picked by your Waxhaw neighbor.
The simple answer: color near Charlotte usually peaks in the first two weeks of November. The mountains turn first, in October. Then the color moves downhill to us.

Under an hourCane Creek Park, Waxhaw
Wooded trails around a 350-acre lake. Take the country roads south of town. No entry fee Nov 1 to Feb 28.
Andrew Jackson State Park, Lancaster, SC
An easy drive south on US 521. A small lake ringed by hardwoods, forest trails, and picnic spots.
Crowders Mountain Drive, Gastonia
An 8.1-mile NC scenic byway. Sparrow Springs Rd to Pinnacle Rd, then Lake Montonia Rd to NC 161. Summit views take a hike.
Half-Day Drives
1 to 2 hoursMorrow Mountain and the Uwharries
My top pick for a slow country drive. You can drive right up to the 936-foot summit for long views of hills and lakes. Want more? Take NC 49 north toward Asheboro.
South Mountains State Park
A foothills trip for folks who want to get out and walk. Wooded trails and High Shoals Falls. Color often peaks in late October, so go earlier.
Day Trips
2 hours or moreHigher up, color usually peaks in mid to late October. By November, look lower in the valleys.
Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway (SC 11)
Over 100 miles along the edge of the Blue Ridge, with mountain views and no steep mountain roads. Stop at Table Rock State Park. Color often peaks in early November.
Chimney Rock and Hickory Nut Gorge
US 64/74A winds along the Rocky Broad River and past Lake Lure. It sits lower than the high peaks, so it tends to hold color into early November.
Blowing Rock and the Blue Ridge Parkway
The classic fall drive. Go in mid to late October. Check the Parkway road status first, since some sections close for roadwork or weather.
Asheville and the French Broad River
Good for a full day or an overnight. Lower river areas often show color from late October into early November. Pair it with lunch in town.
Before You Go
- Check color: Visit NC fall color report
- Check the Parkway: Blue Ridge Parkway road status
- Pick a sunny day. Morning and late afternoon light is best.
- Fill the tank. Mountain gas stations are far apart.
- Bring layers. The mountains run 10 to 15 degrees cooler.
- Try a weekday. Fall weekends get busy.
